PRODUCT CARE
There is no such thing as bad weather if you have the right clothes. Take care of your Musto garment so it can take care of you. Caring for your product is essential to prolong its life and maintain maximum performance. All of our products have washing instructions on the label — please follow them carefully as each garment is made with different fabrics. If you have any questions, please contact our Customer Service Team.
Your Musto garments are engineered with a variety of materials and fabrics to deliver the best combination of freedom of movement, breathability, wind proofing, waterproofing and warmth. Each garment has its own specific requirements — always check the care label inside before washing or treating.
Cleaning
To ensure longevity and top performance, only wash your garments when they genuinely need it. Prior to cleaning, remove any detachable accessories and close all fasteners.
Wash your Musto garments using a non-biological product. We recommend Granger's Performance Wash for the best results — it cleans effectively without compromising fabric performance.
Do Not Use
- Biological detergent — contains enzymes that damage the breathability and waterproofness of performance fabrics
- Fabric softener — affects breathability and moisture management, and can degrade fibres and colour fastness. Many detergents contain hidden softeners — always check the label
- Bleaching agents — many standard detergents contain bleach even when not clearly labelled, so check before use
Drying
Please refer to the care label inside your garment — this will provide specific drying instructions for your product. Not all garments can be tumble dried, so always check before applying heat.
Where tumble drying is permitted, a low heat for a short cycle can help reactivate the DWR treatment on the outer fabric (see Re-proofing below).
Ironing
Do Not
- Iron directly on prints, embroidery, badges or reflectors — always place a cloth between the iron and these areas
If the care label permits, you can place a clean dry cloth over the garment and iron on a low heat with no steam. This can also help reactivate the DWR treatment on waterproof outer fabrics.
Re-proofing
Musto waterproof garments — including BR1, BR2, HPX, MPX and GORE-TEX® jackets — are treated with a Durable Water Repellent (DWR). This polymer coating prevents the outer fabric from becoming saturated, maintaining breathability and keeping you dry. Over time, wear, salt, dirt and repeated washing can reduce DWR effectiveness.
How to tell when re-proofing is needed: Sprinkle water on the jacket. If it beads up and rolls off, the DWR is still working. If the outer fabric wets out and darkens, it's time to reproof.
We recommend Granger's Performance Repel or Clothing Wash and Repel to renew the DWR. Follow the instructions on the re-proofing product. You don't need to reproof after every wash — only when you notice reduced water repellency.
Reactivating with heat: Because DWR is activated by warmth, if the care label allows, tumble dry your clean garment for 20 minutes on a low heat. Alternatively, place a clean towel over the garment and iron on a low heat (no steam). Always check the care label first.
For down or feather-filled garments, use Granger's Down Wash before reproofing.
Storage
Only store your garment once you are certain it is completely dry. It helps to allow it to air naturally for an extra day before packing away, especially at the end of the season.
Down jackets should be stored in a dry, well-ventilated space with room to breathe — do not compress them in a stuff sack for extended periods, as this can damage the insulation over time.
For the best care of your Musto footwear, we recommend Granger's products, though many good alternatives are available. Always read the care label inside your footwear for product-specific guidance.
Cleaning
Before cleaning, remove any loose dirt, sand or dust, and take out the laces.
Clean the upper using a damp, soft sponge or cloth. For suede shoes, use a dry brush instead — stubborn stains on suede can be loosened with steam from a kettle or iron held at a short distance.
If water alone isn't sufficient, use a specialist footwear cleaner. We recommend Granger's Footwear Cleaner, suitable for leather, suede and synthetic uppers.
Drying
Always allow shoes to dry naturally before wearing again. If the inside is wet after sailing or water activity, stuff the shoes with newspaper — it absorbs moisture efficiently and helps retain the shoe's shape.
Do Not
- Expose shoes to direct heat sources — sun, radiator, stove or open fire
- Leave shoes in direct sunlight when drying outside — always choose the shade
Proofing
Musto footwear is treated with a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) that can wear down over time through use, salt and water exposure. Regular proofing restores water repellency and prolongs the life of your footwear.
Before applying any proofer, ensure the shoe is clean and completely dry. We recommend Granger's Footwear Proofer — spray directly onto the shoe at the distance specified on the product, then remove any excess with a clean, dry cloth.
Storage
Store footwear in a cool, dry place away from direct light once completely dry.
Do Not
- Store in direct sunlight
- Store near direct heat sources such as a radiator
Read any care labels inside your Musto accessories for product-specific instructions. Below is general guidance for bags and gloves.
Bags
Cleaning
Begin by gently removing loose dirt with your hand or a soft brush. To clean, wipe the bag down with a damp cloth only.
Do Not Use
- Soaps, fabric softeners or any detergents — these can damage the material and coatings
Drying
Allow bags to dry naturally in a well-ventilated area. Avoid direct sunlight, which can fade colours and degrade materials over time.
Gloves
Musto gloves are engineered with a variety of materials to deliver the best combination of dexterity and warmth. Always read the care label inside your specific pair before washing.
Washing
For most gloves, hand wash gently in fresh water only. Do not machine wash.
Do Not
- Machine wash
- Use soap or detergent — these can damage performance fabrics and membranes
- Wash leather gloves in water — this will deteriorate the leather
Drying
Hang gloves to dry fingers-up in a well-ventilated area.
Do Not
- Wring or twist gloves
- Use a tumble dryer
- Apply any wash-in treatments
